Why Rabies Prevention?

Rabies is a killer disease. It is a zoonotic disease, transmitted to humans from animals, especially dogs. Rabies does not have any treatment. Once the symptoms of rabies infection appear, no treatment can be effective.

Rabies in Numbers

In India, as of 2021, rabies kills more than 20,000 people every year in India, a majority of the victims being children under the age of 15 years. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that around 59,000 people die of rabies annually in over 150 countries. 95% cases occur in Africa and Asia. The shocking fact is that India accounts for 59.9% of rabies deaths in Asia and 35% of deaths globally every year. As per the latest WHO reports, around 1 lakh people died from rabies in India in the last five years. It is more than the number of deaths from COVID-19 (as of September 2020). Vaccination of dogs can prevent rabies, and reduce the risk of transmission to humans.

Don’t Panic
